Working with Oracle Radio Channels

Save channel membership, listen to multiple channels, and select one channel for transmission.

The browser's Join action saves membership and starts listening to a channel. Leave removes that saved membership and stops listening. For API clients, saved REST subscriptions and live WebSocket subscriptions remain separate: a REST subscription alone doesn't establish a live connection.

Review the channel permissions for the operation you choose, and confirm access to the target channel. Saved REST subscriptions and live WebSocket subscriptions have different requirements; check the linked operation before sending a request.

Joining and Selecting Oracle Radio Channels

  • In the browser, you can listen to multiple joined channels while using one transmit channel. Opening a channel workspace changes what you view, not where you transmit. When Radio initially loads your channels, it starts listening to your saved joined channels and restores the saved transmit target if it is joined and listening. Saving a target doesn't reserve the talk floor or start audio. Check the transmit channel before speaking.

While Radio remains open, it reconciles saved membership changes made by an administrator, geofence action, or another authorized client. A newly added membership starts listening; a removed membership stops listening and can cause Radio to select another available transmit channel. Returning focus to Radio also requests the latest state, so a page reload normally isn't required. Always recheck the displayed listening and transmit state before speaking.

Open normal channels can appear before you join them; explicitly denied channels remain concealed. A channel can be visible without granting every channel action. Selecting, joining, and connecting to a channel are different states. Your Radio permissions and the channel's access configuration determine whether you can join, transmit, or send messages.

    1. In Radio icon Radio, review the channels in the Channels rail.
    2. To filter the channel list, select Search channels in the Channels header and enter a channel name.
Clear the text to restore the list. Select Close channel search or press Escape to close the search. This search finds channels, not messages.
    3. Select a channel to open its workspace.
Selecting the channel doesn't join or connect it. You can inspect available activity without joining when your authorization allows it.
    4. If you haven't joined the channel, select Join in its workspace, channel list, or Channel actions menu.
Wait for Joining… to finish and verify that the channel is connected before talking or messaging. The browser saves membership and starts listening; it doesn't start a voice transmission. Talk and message controls for the channel are unavailable while its membership changes. If the channel doesn't connect, follow the connection guidance.
    5. Use Transmit in the channel list to select the channel you intend to talk on, and check the displayed transmit channel.
Listening to several channels does not broadcast your voice to all of them. Follow the talk steps. If you can't confirm the target, stop and follow target guidance.
    6. To review the current participants, select the member count in the channel workspace.
The list and count reflect live channel presence, not every user with a saved subscription. They update as users connect or disconnect. A user can remain online through another session without remaining in this channel.
    7. To stop listening and remove your saved membership, select Leave for the joined channel in its workspace, channel list, or Channel actions icon Channel actions menu.
Wait for Leaving… to finish. Other listening channels remain connected. If you leave the transmit channel, Radio selects another available listening channel, if any; check the target before speaking again. To return, select Join. The browser doesn't provide a separate control to stop listening while retaining saved membership.
The channel workspace shows the selected channel. Joined channels are marked in the Channels rail until you leave them.
  • Open an authenticated WebSocket connection.

These operations manage the current connection, corresponding to connecting and disconnecting a call. Use the REST API tab for saved subscriptions.

    1. Discover an accessible channel with LIST_ALL_CHANNELS.
    2. Send SUBSCRIBE for the channel and verify the subscription result before using live operations.
For the complete sequence, see joining channels.
    3. To inspect connected participants, send LIST_CHANNEL_USERS.
    4. To disconnect from the channel, send UNSUBSCRIBE.

The connection's live subscriptions change independently of its user's saved subscriptions.

  • Use the supported authentication path and check each operation's requirements.

    1. Discover visible channels with listChannels and inspect a channel with getChannel.
    2. For a persistent channel, save your selection with addSubscription.
    3. Verify saved membership with getMySubscriptions.
    4. To inspect currently connected participants, use getChannelUsers.
    5. To remove the saved selection, use removeSubscription.
If your client also has a live channel connection, disconnect it separately using the WebSocket API tab.

The saved channel selection is updated. To participate in a live call, follow the WebSocket API tab.

Joining a Channel in the Android App

Android channel controls use Join, Leave, and Joined. Review the channel permissions; joining does not grant additional access or start a voice transmission.

  1. Sign in, go on duty, and open Radio.
  2. Open the channel controls and select Join for the intended available channel.
  3. Check the membership and live connection separately. Joining live channel… indicates that connection is pending; Saved, but unavailable is not a connected channel.
  4. Select the intended active talk channel and verify its connection before using push-to-talk.
  5. When you no longer need the channel membership, use its Leave control. Check the active channel again before speaking.

If the live channel remains unavailable, restore connectivity and check your access with your Radio administrator. See connection help. iPhone controls still use the separate iOS steps.

Joining and Leaving Channels in the iOS App

Use Join Channel to find available channels. Your channel permissions and access still apply.

  1. While connected, open Channels and select Join Channel.
  2. Find the intended channel in the available-channel list.
  3. Select Join for that channel. Check for Joined before continuing.
  4. Under Joined Channels, select the channel to make it your active talk channel.
  5. Return to Radio and verify the active talk channel and connection before speaking.

You can receive communication from multiple joined channels, but voice goes to one active talk channel. Joining a channel doesn't start a transmission.

To leave a channel, swipe its row under Joined Channels and select Leave. If it is your active talk channel, select another active channel first. Leaving removes your channel membership; it doesn't delete the channel.

If channel actions are unavailable, restore the connection before trying again. If access is denied, ask your Radio administrator to check channel access and permissions. For your first exchange, follow the radio check.

Organizing Channels and Using Shortcuts

In the browser app, save your preferred channel order and use shortcuts for the first nine positions. Reordering or opening a channel doesn't join it or start a voice transmission.

  1. Open Radio and clear any channel search text so the full list is displayed.
  2. Drag a channel to its new position. With keyboard focus on the channel item, press Ctrl+Shift+Up or Ctrl+Shift+Down; on macOS, use Command instead of Ctrl. Reordering requires at least two channels.
  3. Review the shortcut labels after reordering. The order saves automatically to your Radio account. The default keys 1 through 9 follow the first nine positions, not fixed channel names.
  4. Press a channel's shortcut key to open its workspace. To choose that channel for transmission instead, first join and listen to it, then hold Shift and press its shortcut key. Verify the displayed transmit channel before speaking.
  5. To speak, follow the talk steps. Selecting the transmit channel doesn't request the talk floor or start sending audio.

To change or disable these keys, open Settings and use Hotkey. See shortcut settings. If a shortcut doesn't work, follow shortcut guidance.
