Testing Device Network Connectivity

On a Roving Edge device, you can use serial console commands to test network connectivity.

The following tests are available:

  • Ping: Tests network connectivity by sending an echo request data packet to a target device and measures the time it takes for the reply to return.
  • Traceroute: Traces the path that internet packets take from the device to a destination across an IP network.
Note

If you haven't set up DNS during Edge Platform software configuration, hostnames cannot be resolved. You can only use an IP address when running ping or traceroute for connectivity testing.

  1. Connect to the serial console. See Operating the Serial Console.
  2. If the serial console screen is locked, enter the passphrase to access the menu.
  3. In the Roving Edge Device main menu, select Advanced Menu.
  4. Select Network Management.
  5. Select Diagnostic Commands.
  6. Select any of the following diagnostic operations to test connectivity to a destination:

    • Ping: When prompted, enter the destination hostname or IP address. Optionally change the ping count and packet size. After collecting the responses, press ENTER to return to the diagnostic tools menu.
    • Traceroute: When prompted, enter the destination hostname or IP address and optionally, change the default number of hops. After collecting the responses, press ENTER to stop the traceroute.
