Managing Applications Environments

Create and manage applications environments.

Environment management tasks include:

  • Creating an environment
  • Accessing the application service Console
  • Viewing environment details and status
  • Adding and editing tags

About Environment State

During the lifecycle of your environment, the state can change based on actions taken on the environment. The state of the environment isn't the same as the status of the application running on the environment. The following table shows the possible values for the state of your environment and how the environment state impacts the availability of running applications:

State Description Applications Available?
Creating The environment resource is being created. No
Active The environment resource is available. Yes
Updating The environment resource is updating. This status occurs when configurations or changes are being implemented, such as moving the environment to a different compartment. In this state, the applications are still available, but you can't make any other changes to the environment resource settings (such as adding tags) until this update is complete. Yes
Deleting The environment resource is in the process of being deleted. No
Deleted The environment resource has been deleted. No
Failed The environment resource creation failed. No

Environment Management Tasks

To create an environment
Note

The following steps are the general procedure for creating an environment. Some details for your application might vary. See your application's help for details on specific options for your application.

  1. From the Applications Console, under My Applications, select Create environment for the application you want to create an environment for.
  2. (Optional) Select a different compartment in which to create this environment.

The compartment selection defaults to the compartment that you last selected when you started the create environment flow. If you haven't created any compartments in your tenancy, the root compartment is the only compartment available. For more information, see Choosing a Compartment.

  3. If multiple subscriptions are available to provision, select the subscription ID from the list. To get more information about a subscription, select Show subscription details.
  4. Confirm the default region or select another region from the list.

The region is where an environment is geographically located. The region can't be changed after you create an environment. If this is the first environment that you're creating for this subscription, you can select a different region from the list. If you have already created environments for this subscription, this value can't be updated. All environments associated with a single subscription must be located in the same region. For more information, see Choosing a Region for an Environment.

  5. Enter a name for the environment. The name can't be changed later.
  6. Select the type of instance. Environment instances included in your subscription that are available to provision are listed in the menu. For more information, see Selecting the Environment Type or Instance Type.
  7. Enter an email address for the default administrator.

The administrator that you add here is assigned the default Administrator role for the applications in this environment. For more information, see Assigning an Environment Administrator.

  8. To configure additional settings, select Advanced options.
  9. (Optional, available only with the purchase of subscriptions that include Oracle Break Glass) Under Encryption, select how to encrypt the environment.

By default, your applications environments are protected by Oracle-managed encryption keys. If you have a subscription that includes the Oracle Break Glass service, you can opt to use customer-managed keys to provide and manage the encryption keys that protect your environments. For more information, see Customer-Managed Keys for Oracle Break Glass.

  10. (Optional) Under Tagging, add tags to the environment.

If you have permissions to create a resource, then you also have permissions to apply free-form tags to that resource. To apply a defined tag, you must have permissions to use the tag namespace. For more information about tagging, see Resource Tags. If you're not sure whether to apply tags, skip this option or ask an administrator. You can apply tags later.

  11. Select Create.

You can track the progress of the environment creation by viewing the status of the work request. After the Create environment work request succeeds, a welcome email with sign-in instructions is sent to the Admin email address entered during environment creation.

To list environments

On the Applications home page, under My applications, select your application name.

All environments in all regions are listed.

Alternatively, open the navigation menu  and select My Applications. Under Applications, select the name of your application, and then select Environments.

If you don't see the environments you're expecting, ensure that you're viewing the correct compartment and region.

Filtering List Results

Use filters to limit the environments in the list. Perform one of the following actions depending on the options that you see:

  • From the Search and Filter box above the list table, select one or more filters and specify the values that you want to use to narrow the list. In general, the filters correspond to the columns shown in the list table, although some filters represent attributes that aren't shown in the table. The Compartment filter is always displayed next to Applied filters, and the Status filter shows Active and Creating by default.
  • On the left side of the list page, select a value from one of the available filters, such as compartment, state, or tags.

Change the order of the items in the list table by using the sort icons next to the column names.

For information about searching for resources and managing the columns in the list table, if those features are available, see Listing Resources.

Actions

In the list table, select the name of an environment to open its details page, where you can view its status and perform other tasks.

To perform an action on an environment directly from the list table, select an available option from the Actions menu (three dots) in the row for that environment, if shown:

  • View details: Open the details page for the environment.
  • Copy OCID: Copy the OCID of the environment to the clipboard.

To create an environment, select Create.

To access the service console
Note

Some instance types, such as the Maxymiser Recommendations instance type don't have a service console. For these instance types, the Open service console option isn't applicable.

After the environment is provisioned, you can access the service console from the environment details page.

  1. On the Environments list page, select the environment that you want to work with. If you need help finding the list page, see To list environments.

  2. On the details page, select Open service console. You're prompted to enter your username and password for the application service.
To view environment details and status

On the Environments list page, select the environment that you want to work with. If you need help finding the list page, see To list environments.

Details and status are listed on the page.

To move an environment to a different compartment

You can move environments from one compartment  to another. After you move an environment to a new compartment, inherent policies apply immediately and affect access to the environment. Moving an environment doesn't affect access to the applications on the environment. For more information, see Managing Compartments.

  1. On the Environments list page, select the environment that you want to work with. If you need help finding the list page, see To list environments.

  2. On the details page, select the Actions menu and then select Move resource.
  3. Select the compartment to move the environment to.
  4. Select Move resource.
To add or edit tags

For details about adding tags, see Resource Tags.

To delete an environment

Deleting an environment isn't a supported self-service action. If you need to delete an environment, file a service request.
