Using the Edge Installer

Roving Edge devices ship from the factory with only a small OS, referred to as the Edge Installer. Its primary role is to enable self-provisioning so you can run the installation workflow at your location, but it provides other menu options you might use before installing the full OCI Edge Platform software.

Note

Complete device registration and then proceed directly to installing the Edge Platform software. The registration is only valid for 60 days, and delaying installation past 60 days will cause certificate expiration, preventing RPT/RPST requests. If this occurs, you’ll need to factory reset the device, contact Oracle Support, and repeat the registration process.

When you have powered on the Roving Edge device and connect to the serial console, the Edge Installer provides access to a set of Advanced Operations.

Menu Option Description

Check for Configuration Interface Software Updates

Select this option to check online if a newer version of the Edge Installer serial console software is available for your Roving Edge device.

If a new version is found, you're prompted to proceed with the upgrade. The system must be rebooted to complete the upgrade.

Collect Logs

Select this option to collect the Edge Installer command history, and diagnostic information for use by Oracle Support. In case you run into issues with self-provisioning, include these logs with your service request (SR).

Factory Reset Configuration Interface

Select this option to remove all the parameters you entered through the Edge Installer, and return the Roving Edge device to the configuration it shipped with from the factory.

To complete this operation you need to contact Oracle Support and request a factory reset password.

Oracle Authorized Personnel

Do not use this option. It's reserved for Oracle authorized personnel.

Check for Configuration Interface Software Update via USB

Select this option to find a newer version of the Edge Installer serial console software on a USB drive connected to your Roving Edge device.

If a new version is found, you're prompted to proceed with the upgrade. The system must be rebooted to complete the upgrade.

Import Edge Platform Installation Package via USB

Select this option to install software packages onto your Roving Edge device from a USB drive instead of downloading them from OCI.

Reboot

Select this option to reboot your Roving Edge device.

Shutdown

Select this option to turn off your Roving Edge device.

Loading the Edge Platform Software from a USB Drive

USB side loading lets you to install Oracle approved software packages onto Roving Edge devices from a USB drive instead of downloading them from OCI. This capability is intended for deployments with limited or controlled network connectivity, or when staging multiple Roving Edge devices offline.

With side loading, administrators prepare an exFAT formatted USB 3.0 drive, load the required Edge Platform installation files provided by Oracle, and import the package through the Edge Installer serial configuration interface. This process validates the package on the device before making it available for installation.

Prerequisites

Ensure these requirements are met:

  • USB side loading requires at least version 2.0.58 of the Edge Installer.

  • An exFAT formatted USB 3.0 drive with at least 100 GB of free space must be used.

  • On the local workstation you need an application to extract compressed archives, and privileges to format drives and copy files.

Preparing the USB Drive

On the local workstation, prepare the USB drive as follows:

  1. Ensure that the USB drive doesn't contain files you still need. Confirm that you have selected the correct drive before formatting. The selected drive will be erased.

  2. Format the USB drive using a single partition and create an exFAT file system.

  3. Extract the files from the archives onto the USB drive. The Edge Platform software is packaged in *.iso files.

  4. Verify file integrity. Ensure that no files are missing or incomplete.

  5. Safely unmount the USB drive, then physically remove it from the workstation.

Loading the Software Installation Files

Plug the USB drive you prepared into the Roving Edge device and load the software onto the device.

  1. Insert the USB drive into the bottom USB port on the Roving Edge device.

  2. Connect to the serial console.

  3. In the Edge Installer menu, select Advanced Operations > Import Edge Platform Installation Package via USB.

  4. When prompted, confirm to proceed with loading the package.

    USB stick detected.

Newer Edge Platform Package is available.
Proceed to load it?

Loading the Edge Platform Package ...

    Wait for the device to load and validate the package. This can take several minutes.

  5. When the serial console reports the import operation is complete, the USB drive is unmounted. Remove the drive from the Roving Edge device.

Proceed to 4) Install Platform Image to 2) Start Installation.

  6. Proceed with self-provisioning the device. Skip the download step. See Download and Install Edge Platform Software.

    In the serial console main menu, select Install Platform Image > Start Installation.
